Thunder Valley’s story has a foundation in youth, compassion, belief and courage. 

The story of the Thunder Valley started many years before the formal organization was incorporated. It began with a family, and the matriarch of that family’s belief in helping those in need, especially children. She and her husband believed in the importance of providing children with a safe place -- she would offer her home, her time, food and clothing all while raising her eight children. It is this spirit of selflessness, generosity and compassion that continues to guide our work today.

Carrying the spirit of their mother, some of her children, alongside many other younger adults, embarked on an incredible journey that culminated in Thunder Valley, the organization. What began as a conversation around an inipi (sweatlodge) fire that evidenced a restlessness and hunger for change, these young people dreamed of something different -- a future for their children and grandchildren that was built in hope, not fear. These young visionaries took the challenge to take action instead of waiting for others to determine our collective future, relying on the strength and guidance of our ancestors, and those who have fought for our right to exist, to guide our path.  

It is through these humble beginnings that Thunder Valley continues the fight for our people’s freedom. The Thunder Valley story is a spiritual journey that began with a matriarch, continued through the hope of young adults reimagining a different future, and persists today through the commitment of community members holding fast to prayer, belief, compassion, and hope for our people.
