Our Youth Leadership Development programming empowers youth to learn about culture, history, environmental justice, political education, community organizing, healthy lifestyles and sacred sites. Most importantly, we promote and support community activities that strengthen cultural identity of young people, giving them a solid foundation from which to grow and learn.
We believe that youth have the answers to many of the challenges they face. It is our model to give the youth the resources and support they need to create opportunities for youth across the reservation. In the summer of 2015 we employed ten youth ages 13-17 to plan and organize community events. These events included Glow Runs, Basketball Tournaments, and Color Runs. These events turned out hundreds of children and their families. We believe that this model develops leaders in the community.
The youth also gained access to financial literacy, bank accounts, and direct deposit. In addition the youth developed individual success plans to help guide and focus them in the year to come. They were able to develop financial, health, educational, and personal goals. Additionally, we bring youth to sacred sites to learn more about Lakota culture and history.
We will soon announce the application process for the summer of 2016 will be released soon, so stay tuned!
